A Celebration of the Lincoln Bicentennial
Nationally known Public Radio personality Bob Edwards is guest host for Our Lincoln, featuring the University of Kentucky Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Copland's Lincoln Portrait with spoken word by Nick Clooney. Our Lincoln stars the internationally acclaimed American Spiritual Ensemble, whose soloist Angelique Clay sings "My Country 'Tis of Thee" commemorating Marian Anderson’s historic concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. UK Opera Theatre performs selections from River of Time, a new Kentucky folk opera about Lincoln as a young man. And there’s much more: Over 150 voices of the Lexington Singers and the UK Chorale lend their talents to “Songs of Freedom” from the Lincoln era; Metropolitan Opera star Angela Brown will perform a selection from the opera, Margaret Garner; and Kentucky’s own Gregory Turay solos in the world premiere of a musical composition, “The Gettysburg Address,” by Alan Gershwin. Kentucky's poet laureate, Jane Gentry, reads her new poem dedicated to the life and legacy of Abraham Lincoln and the Lexington Vintage Dance Society recreates a waltz from the 1861 Inaugural Union Ball. Dramatic selections include Kentucky Repertory Theatre's cameo from One Man's Lincoln, an original drama about Lincoln as told by his law partner, Billy Herndon, and Kentucky Chautauqua ®vignettes offer the opinions of those who knew Lincoln best.
